"When the day of Pentecost had come, there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind... and among them divided tongues as of fire." Both images describe the way the disciples felt experiencing the liveliness of the Spirit's presence newly apprehended in their lives. What they came to hear and accept was what Jesus said, "When the Spirit of Truth comes, it will guide you into all truth. For it will glorify me, because it will take what is mine and declare it to you."
That's the transfer of Jesus' truth to all disciples, while the images keep conveying the Spirit’s energy in our work, lives, hopes, and actions. Why? How? For what? Dr. Philip Conner, St. Cuthbert's Seminary, Ushaw, England answers and prays: “You promised to pour out your Spirit that we may know the truth of Your love and proclaim it to the ends of the earth...Prepare our hearts for the Feast of Pentecost, that we may be truly open to receive the great gifts and blessings of You immeasurable love." Right. AMEN.
